Asian and Asian American Studies on the Tentative Agreement
February 10, 2024
The Department of Asian and Asian American Studies calls upon our colleagues across campus to join us in voting NO on the CFA Tentative Agreement. On January 22, 2024, CSU faculty, students, and community supporters across the state united to improve faculty working conditions and student learning conditions. It was the largest university strike in US history and a defining moment for public education and labor. Just one day into the historic weeklong strike, the strike was called off, and a TA that failed to meet our basic demands was approved.
In the long tradition of Asian American and Pacific Islander workers, students, and community members fighting for educational and social justice, we vote NO on the approved Tentative Agreement that fails to address the urgent needs of CFA’s rank-and-file membership:
The 5% retroactive GSI is a pay cut.
The 5% GSI for 2024 is not guaranteed.
The 2.65% SSI does not go to every faculty member.
The increases in 2023 to the salary floor of Lecturers A & B benefit very few faculty at the entry steps of the pay ranges. The second increase is not guaranteed.
There is NO increase for Lecturers on the Salary Ranges C and D.
The TA extends our terrible contract one more year.
There is no enforceable language to control or reduce skyrocketing workloads and class sizes.
There are no obligations for the CSU to increase the students-to-counselor ratio.
The 10 weeks of paid family leave does not cover an entire semester or quarter.
There are no requirements of the CSU to create gender inclusive bathrooms or lactation spaces for nursing parents in every building.
There are no enforceable protections from being questioned by armed CSU police.
Cal State LA faculty deserve a fair contract that supports faculty and student learning conditions. The CSU cannot exist without our labor. This fight is ours to win. Vote NO!
