Labor Council Meets with President Eanes
The Cal State LA Labor Council is made up of the campus union leadership and include, CSUEU, Teamsters, UAW and CFA, and meets throughout the academic year. On 9/27/2024, the Labor Council met with President Eanes and several members of her cabinet, including interim Provost, Amy Bippus, interim Vice President, Claudio Lindow, and interim Associate Vice President of Human Resources, Nida Niravanh. The agenda covered two main topics: ongoing health and safety concerns with King Hall and budget transparency.
Eanes made it abundantly clear that King Hall will not be replaced. While interim AVP Niravanh ensured “testing was done all over, there is no issue with King Hall right now.” It has since been reported a new exposure in the A-wing has been discovered and currently being remediated. Members of the Labor Council made it abundantly clear that continued monitoring and testing is necessary to ensure the building is safe for students, staff and faculty. President Eanes agreed to provide the Labor Council with a timeframe for continued repairs, remediation and their master plan for all buildings, and the campus as a whole.
Last month, a campuswide email informed the campus community of a hiring freeze; however, with exceptions. Eanes confirmed the search for the Provost will continue, a project manager will be hired to manage King Hall, increase policing and any additional positions for hire must be approved by her office during the “freeze.” The freeze is one example of confusing messaging coming from the campus, especially in regards to the campus budget. “In addition to communication, we need more transparency. Decisions aren’t being made with staff and faculty. The budget deficit announcement emails calls for conversations, and there’s been none. The impact is the budget - that’s under our purview, as a unions […] You have laid out the budget, and there was no decision that includes us,” stated Anthony Ratcliff, CFA-LA Chapter President.
The Labor Council will meet next week for additional planning. Please mark your calendar for the first Wednesday of November (11/6) for our monthly Unity Wednesday - and wear your red shirt!
