Teamsters call for ULP strike, how do faculty support?
Teamsters have announced a systemwide strike of the 23 campuses on 11/14
November 6, 2023
Dear Colleagues,
Last week, 95% of voting CFA members authorized the union to call a strike. We are still in the factfinding stage of the statutory process, which means it is not legal for us to take job action (including a strike) until (1) the fact-finder releases his report, and (2) we respect a mandatory 10-day cooling-off period. That means we won’t be legal to strike until at least after the Fall Break.
While we were voting, 94% of voting Teamsters Local 2010 members also authorized a strike. Teamsters Local 2010 represents Unit 6 skilled trade workers on all 23 CSU campuses. They are licensed and/or certified workers, including our campus electricians, forklift drivers, plumbers, engineers, HVAC, elevator repairs, and much more. To get the contracts they deserve, they announced their call for a one-day ULP, or Unfair Labor Practice strike, on Tuesday, November 14.
The Teamsters and CFA have worked closely building up to this moment, and even though it is not legal for CFA to strike with them at this time, ALL faculty are encouraged to be in solidarity with the Teamsters strike.
How to respect the Teamster picket line:
If you are scheduled to teach on Tuesday, November 14th, you can avoid crossing the picket line by holding your classes remotely, or off-campus.
Join the Teamsters’ picket lines that will be set up at Cal State LA.
The CFA EBoard will coordinate with the Teamsters to find out other ways we can support their strike, including picket line shifts, rally times, etc.. Please stay tuned for additional information.
The Teamsters’ strike is related to every part of our work as educators in the CSU, no matter our discipline. At Cal State LA, the Labor Council has been actively working together to build solidarity among faculty, staff and students to support all our efforts towards dignity and respect in our workplace. Teamsters include our students, their family members, and the pillars of their communities. They are the reason any of us can teach at all on servers or in buildings with doors, restrooms, and air filtration systems. They weathered a great deal through pandemic restrictions, and they deserve to be treated with respect.
Like us, they are the CSU.
We are here to answer any questions or concerns you have about this information.
