Dear Colleagues and Union Family,
As you may already know, the CFA Board of Directors has unanimously approved a systemwide CSU faculty strike from January 22 to January 27, 2024. In solidarity, the Teamsters 2010 have also called a strike for the same week! These joint strikes are intended to fully disrupt the start of the Spring semester at Cal State LA and most other CSU campuses.
In organizing terms, our recent one-day strikes on our campus and the Pomona, San Francisco, and Sacramento campuses were resoundingly successful - and brought the CSU back to the bargaining table on January 12, 2023. Hundreds of faculty joined the picket line on our campus, and we were met with hundreds of students, staff and community allies.
Despite recent spikes in student fees, and double-digit raises for campus presidents, it is clear that admin is uninterested in prioritizing fair compensation for our faculty. Management’s meager counter offer includes a 5% General Salary Increase in year 1, and contingent raises in years 2 and 3. This offer also fails to raise the floor for our lowest paid faculty, who often work multiple jobs to make ends meet. By refusing management’s weak counter offer, we have committed to continue the fight for our transformative bargaining proposals.
Join us for CFA-LA Strike Meetings on January 4, 2024 and again on January 10, 2024, where we will have more information and details about our systemwide 5-day strike. We are also returning to the bargaining table with management for last-ditch effort negotiations on January 8 and 9 at the CFA Headquarters in Sacramento and January 11 and 12 at the Chancellor’s Office in Long Beach. We will be inviting Cal State LA faculty to participate in these bargaining sessions virtually when in Sacramento and in person when in Long Beach. At that time, we will impress upon management that the only way to avert the systemwide strike is if they do better by our demands.
In the meanwhile, we hope you are able to take some much needed time off during this winter break. We know our priorities are our students, so as you begin to work on your course syllabi for Spring, we wanted to provide some provided sample language about the strike for your use: Cal State LA Student Template - Jan 2024.
In Union,
CFA-LA Executive Board
