We saved the CSU budget, now it's up to the CSU to keep their promise to our students
Dear academic coworkers,
You may have heard the big news:
the full CSU budget has been restored for 2026 and beyond!
For the 2025-2026 year, the state has offered the CSU a 0% interest loan to cover the cuts already in place.
In addition, Sonoma State got $45 million in addition to their regular funding to recover from the layoffs and program discontinuations their President preemptively imposed on the campus.
We will get emails from administrators claiming this victory (like this one), but this win is ALL OURS! At Cal State LA this past year, we:
Rallied with students to protect their classes.
Filed several grievances, and demanded to meet and confer with the CSU.
Met with local and statewide legislators.
Increased our membership numbers.
Organized with students, staff, counselors, and graduate students.
Hosted RTP, range elevation, immigration rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, and free speech workshops.
Got out the vote and won big supporting Ysabel Jurado in LA City Council District 14.
Held numerous rallies against Pres. Eanes and Chancellor Garcia.
Led teach-ins, disorientation seminars, press conferences, and budget forums.
Disbursed emergency support funds to faculty impacted by the fires.
Showed up in CFA red at every public event held by administration.
Marched with our sibling unions across Los Angeles.
Hosted three town halls and mobilized faculty in teams to fight budget cuts alongside our staff colleagues with the Cal State LA Labor Council!
It is a relief to know our efforts were fruitful. We worked hard this year because we knew what we were facing, including cuts to instruction, layoffs of our dedicated faculty, delayed graduation timelines for students who couldn’t get the classes they needed, and program and department instability.
Meanwhile, Cal State LA’s administration continued to spend students’ tuition and CA taxpayers’ dollars on duplicate Provosts and other administrative hires! This is a good first step, but President Eanes and Chancellor Garcia: we want what’s fair! We are calling for:
A stop to all cuts to instruction
A stop to increased course caps outside of EP&R 76-36
Reappointments and entitlements to lecturer faculty who have experienced job loss as a result of unapproved “guidelines” set by faculty affairs
Commit to student success and increased enrollment by supporting faculty and staff needs on campus!
Especially in LA, now is the time to stand together to protect what we've won and ensure these funds are spent on students, faculty, and our community—not on corporate or administrative interests.
One important way to safeguard our working conditions, our students' learning environment, and the future of the CSU is by building our membership! Encourage your office neighbors and work besties to join CFA today: https://www.calfac.org/join-cfa/
